January 10, 2017 Weekly Menu

Happy New Year! We’re making a change to our weekly lunch schedule this year, serving lunch Tuesday through Thursday each week. We look forward to seeing you at the table this year! Here’s what’s cooking for you this week: beef enchiladas, chicken and dumplings, and a shrimptastic po-boy Thursday. What We’re Cooking for You This Week Tuesday, January 10, 2017 Beef enchiladas, fresh house-made tortilla chips, fresh salsa and house salad. We take flavorfully cooked ground beef, rolled in lightly fried corn tortillas, and add our very own deeply delicious house-made enchilada sauce to make a great dish. Well, apparently the fearless explorer Christopher Columbus needed some glasses. You see, he mistook the manatees he saw while sailing near the Dominican Republic for mermaids. He wrote, they “are not half as beautiful as they are painted.” We just keep thinking of the Veggie Tales’ song about the beautiful “Barbara Manatee, you are the one for me.” These enchiladas won’t be mistaken for anything but good, home-cooked food. Wednesday, January 11, 2017 Chicken and dumplings. These dumplings come seeded with herbs …

Happy Anniversary, Mr. Grinch!

Well, The Grinch joins us at the table — apparently, he’s a big shrimp lover. And, we say goodbye to the originator of the food icon The Big Mac. Here’s what we’ve got cooking for you at week’s end: Our very special fried green tomato BLT and shrimptastic po-boys.  What We’re Cooking for You at Week’s End Thursday, December 1 Fried green tomato BLT. We toast our fresh house-made bread, add our house salad with fried green tomatoes and bacon to recreate the old standby BLT with a little bit of southern jazz. He wanted a bigger, better sandwich for his customers, and for two years, he tried unsuccessfully to get the franchise to pull the burger into their menu (calling it first, “The Aristocrat” and second, “The Blue Ribbon Burger”). During the third year, the franchise relented, and a twenty-one-year-old marketing secretary coined the name we know so well: “The Big Mac.” Jim Deligatti, an early Ray Kroc McDonald’s franchisee in the Pittsburgh area, designed the burger, and Esther Glickstein Rose gave us the now historic name. Well, we said goodbye …

Well, on this very day way back in 1947, President Harry S. Truman appeared on TV for the very first time. Grainy and seen only in 44,000 homes (not many folks owned TV’s), President Truman made an appeal for decreased usage of food goods (e.g. grain, meat, poultry, and eggs) so we could help our friends and former enemies rebuild a tattered and war-torn Europe through The Marshall Plan. The first President to appear from the White House, starting an interesting …

Fire the rockets, we have lift off!” “Wooooohooooo!” yells Superchicken, “I’ll bet no other earthbound Gallusian has flown this fast!” “No, I’ll bet no other goat has gone this fast,” responded an overexcited Wonder Kid. “Yeeeehaaaw!” Superchicken gives his best grito as they break the surly …

What We’re Cooking for You This Week Tuesday, August 23 Special made Louisiana red beans and rice with hot water cornbread and house salad. Our red beans come fully and deeply flavored, cooked in our own house-made smoked ham hock stock that will totally set the week in motion. Seems just like yesterday, but 47 years ago in August, a whole bunch of folks met in a farmer’s field in a place called Woodstock to make some crazy history. Lots of music, food, dancing, tents, and big hair expressed the peace and love of those last days of the 1960’s. They didn’t have any beans, though. Probably would have to rename the event Ka-boomstock. Yep, you know what we mean. Come join us …

The Cat in the Hat Dropped By

“Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?” Bluto Blutarsky (played by John Belushi) asked, rallying his Delta House troops to deal with “double secret probation.” We know the rest of the story: toga party. Well, it’s a little wet to go anywhere dressed in sheets, but we’ve got some great food that’ll help stem the rainy blues. Dr. Suess’ immortal The Cat in the Hat (our favorite fight the rainy day book) opens with these wonderful lines, “The sun did not shine. It was too …

Secretary of the Agriculture Tom Vilsak says, “I don’t care what anybody says: Nothing is better than a tomato you grow. There’s something about it that’s different than a tomato you can buy. It’s a great thing.” Hey, fresh tomatoes are totally great things, but maybe putting them in tomato …

What We’re Cooking for You This Week Thursday, June 23 Chicken and sausage jambalaya. Well, Cajun calling! What’s better than a delicious, hearty mix of chicken, sausage, rice, and tasty goodies? Wonder Kid wanders into Superchicken’s secret room one day only to find our squab super hero dressed, well, a little oddly. Superchicken, it seems, is a karaoke crooner, and he loves the mic, the music, the mod of singing. Yep, it’s his alter ego, Elvis Diamond, replete with big hair, side burns, and a sequined denim suit á la Elvis and Hot August Night. He sings all the great ones, “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Song Sung Blue,” and “Red, Red Wine.” Of course his favorites are “Jailhouse Rock” because he likes that “jailbird sing” bit, “Houndog,” and …
